Michelin-starred chef, Rohit Ghai, is one of the world’s most renowned culinary innovators and a legend of London’s fine dining scene. He was previously Executive Chef at Bombay Bustle, then onto Jamavar (earning a Michelin-star in under a year – the first time an Indian Chef has been awarded this in the UK), prior to this he resided at Gymkhana, Hoppers, Trishna, Verandah (in Copenhagen) and Benares.

In 2018, Rohit launched his first standalone restaurant, Kutir in Chelsea, which attracted international praise and critical acclaim. With further success opening Ishka 360, in Doha mid 2021, followed by Manthan in Mayfair London, Aangan in Muscat, Gup & Shup in Dubai and most recently in 2023, Rivayat at Oberoi’s hotel in Marrekech.

Rohit published his first cookery book in October 2021,‘Tarkari’, focusing on vegetarian and vegan Indian cuisine and is planning to launch a follow-up.

As huge fans of Chef Rohit we were excited to find out how he enjoys his time in London, when his busy schedule permits.

Kutir Terrace

Describe your perfect day in London?

As the weather warms up, wandering around Chelsea is a great day out in London. The vibe is always nice, and the architecture is beautiful. I would then suggest popping into the terrace at Kutir for a cocktail, as it’s always fun to enjoy alfresco drinks in the heart of Chelsea. And, of course, sampling a few dishes from my new spring menu – there are lots of exciting fresh dishes to try for lunch and dinner time.

Favourite restaurant?

A.Wong. It is nearby and so handy to pop in, and there are always amazing Asian dishes with great flavours.

Best place for brunch?

I rarely go for brunch because of my busy schedule so I prefer to cook breakfast/brunch at home. But the last time I visited a local café was in Richmond a couple of years ago, I like the area.

What was the last museum or gallery you visited?

The Royal Air Force Museum London. It’s a great family day out whatever the weather. Outstanding facilities with dozens of planes all throughout history – truly fascinating. It was a wonderful experience for my family with loads for the kids to see and do.

Where are the best places to shop?

Bicester Village for clothes as everything is in one place so the shopping experience is super convenient and it’s a nice little place to wander around and grab coffee. I also love Quality Foods in West London for Indian groceries; you can get a delivery straight to your doorstep which is handy.

Preferred bar or pub for a great night out?

Connaught Bar and Hotel – always great drinks and atmosphere!

Most relaxing place to unwind?

The Lake District for its beautiful countryside and being away from the hustle and bustle of London.

If you had only one day in London, where would you visit?

Buckingham Palace and Big Ben to see some history and to view the beautiful architecture. I would then head along to Soho and Borough Market to try out different foods and cocktails – there are always lots of stalls which makes for a really fun day out for all ages.

What is your top London tip?

The best way to experience London is with a local who really knows the area. Find someone who lives in London and explore the streets together to discover the best spots the city has to offer. Don’t forget to visit the best restaurants and pubs in London, but always carry an umbrella as the weather can be unpredictable here! Also, try and book tickets in advance if visiting museums or local attractions.

Tell us what you are currently up to?

I am currently working on our special game and winter menus for both restaurants Kutir and Manthan, and other restaurants outside of London, too. I like to always make seasonal changes to keep the menus new and innovative for unique experiences for new and existing customers. I am very hands on with the cooking and the overseeing of all my restaurants to keep the quality consistently great which is very important to me.

For a superlative dining experience, make sure to book Kutir and Manthan which are both incredible restaurants.
