Finding yourself in the heart of central London elicits two things: the immediate need of a sit down, and a powerful, re-galvanising caffeine fix. And what could be better than coffee in Soho? It’s the ultimate spot for people watching, and with a multitude of venues that would impress even the hardened connoisseur, you’re sure to find your perfect brew. We like our coffee with views overlooking Old Compton Street, with a flat white (extra shot!) and the morning paper. So, how do you take yours?
Here’s our pick of the best spots for coffee in Soho:
Bar Italia
This classic Italian café barely needs an introduction for its role in Soho’s history stretches back all the way to 1949. It has been a place for friends to meet and late-night revelery, famously open until 4am! It can count David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Francis Ford Coppola among its most famous patrons. Stepping inside its famous doors you are instantly a part of the cafe’s great history, and the coffee is not too bad, either! We jest, it’s really good coffee. Long may Bar Italia reign.

Grabbing a seat outside to enjoy one of their potent espressos with a sweet and creamy cannoli.
Café Boheme
We mentioned in the introduction that we like our coffee with views over Old Compton Street and the place in question is the hugely beloved Café Boheme. This divine restaurant/café was inspired by the 19th-century French poets that would regularly meet along the street. It’s a place to gather and also to contemplate. Their coffee is sourced from the ever-popular brand, Grind, which is one of our preferred coffee brands. If you’re looking to immerse in the atmosphere of Soho, we can think of no better place.

Their excellent flat white paired with a freshly baked croissant – what could be better…
Algerian Coffee Stores
One of the most iconic stores in all of London with a staggering 136-year old history. This is London’s oldest standing coffee store and one of the world’s top coffee and tea suppliers. You’ll notice the 19th-century wooden top counter that hasn’t changed in all the years it’s been open, as well as old wooden shelves filled to the brim with tempting coffees and teas. It can be quite overwhelming to choose from the 80 coffees on offer, so the friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to help. In terms of a freshly brewed cup to take-away, you can pick up an espresso for the bargain price of £1.

Pick up the Algerian Special which is a customer favourite. It’s a rich blend of Colombian and Arabica beans – ideal for that first morning cup.
Soderberg Soho
Known for their full-bodied coffee and exquisite Swedish pastries, this stylish coffee shop and bakery is exactly what is needed after a busy morning in Soho. Although the café feels relaxed and unhurried they take their coffee very seriously with master roasters, Johan and Nystrom, at the helm. If you manage to grab a space at the comfy couch, you’ll probably never leave.

A large Cappuccino with a waffle, maple syrup and toasted hazelnuts is our go-to order.
Flat White
This unpretentious, independent café is the ideal spot to grab your coffee on the go. It’s the sort of place that the locals return to time again, and as the menu is so small, you know it’s going to be good. If you’re looking for something with a little more kick than usual we always order the Cortado (espresso with warm milk) as it’s the perfect pick-me-up for any time of day.

As you’re already on Berwick Street check out the market which has a great mix of food, drink and fashion vendors.
Grind Soho
A now familiar name in London, with a plethora of shops dotted all around London, Grind had become known for their altogether decent coffee. Their custom blend is ethically sourced from sustainable farms, and always roasted freshly on the London premises every day. They also supply a number of top restaurants around London, so you know you’re going to get a good cup. Additionally, at night, you can grab a delicious cocktail from their evening menu. Espresso Martini anyone?!
