The south-east borough of Greenwich is one of the city’s premier locations, not only for its maritime history, but for its ever-growing food and restaurant culture. You can find a wealth of options from street eats courtesy of Greenwich Market, to classic pie and mash, a legendary fish and chips take-away, as well as good ol’ pub fare.
I think there’s something to pique every palette, and the best thing of all, every location is close by so take advantage of the landmark sights of the Cutty Sark, Royal Maritime Museum and Greenwich Park in between sittings!
Here is the definitive guide to the best places to eat in Greenwich.
Goddards at Greenwich
There’s no better place to indulge in a traditional pie and mash than at the legendary Goddards of Greenwich. Established in 1890, this renowned establishment has been serving customers for over 130 years, with a stellar reputation for most delicious, home-cooked pies.
You’ll be pleased to know that the recipes haven’t changed a jot since the day they first opened, so you’ll be experiencing the dish as it was originally intended. This family run business prides themselves on making the pies fresh every day, using locally sourced ingredients and British meat.
If this is your first trip to Goddards there’s no better introduction than the classic Beef pie, with mash and liquor – and believe me the savoury, herby liquor is a must. If a traditional mince beef pie is not tickling your tastebuds there’s a thoughtful menu of further options including chicken & ham, lamb & rosemary, or cheese & onion.
And if you happen to have any room left, you can’t beat their homemade bread and butter pudding with custard.

The Ship
The newly relaunched The Ship is a welcome addition to the vibrant pub scene around Greenwich. And with a prime location along Greenwich Pier, this maritime-themed pub feels like a long overdue addition to the area.
Historically, the original Ship Tavern was an integral part of Greenwich riverside over three centuries ago. The pub originally opened back in 1885, and was thriving hub serving hundreds of guests, with food very much at the fore.
The first thing you’ll noticed when you step into this pub is the décor which positively brims with ship models and extravagant figure heads.
Here you’ll find a well thought-through modern pub menu with a nod to its nautical heritage. First off, have a look at the ‘Seafood’ section of the menu with a lovely selection of fresh options including the Oysters with ponzu, Fried calamari with spicy mayo, Salmon crudo, and the divine Garlic butter shrimp.
For more traditional fare, the Double Cheeseburger with fries will need more than a few napkins; Salt Beef Sandwich with English mustard was a generous portion and certainly works as main; or the heart Chicken Parmigiana with a deeply savoury Parmesan topping.
If there’s any room for the dessert, the gooey Skillet Cookie and ice-cream will more than satisfy any sweet cravings.

The Golden Chippy
Freshly made to order fish and chips is one of life’s true culinary pleasures. And straight from the fryer, crispy battered fish is the order of the day at the Golden Chippy! This is one of the city’s most legendary venues with visitors from all over the world travelling to get a taste of this famous ‘chippy’.
The establishment was first opened back in 2005 and soon became one of the areas most talked about venues. It quickly became an integral part of the local community, with a steady stream of regulars that continues to this day.
In 2016 the ultimate accolade arrived when it was voted the number one restaurant on TripAdvisor – beating many of London’s top restaurants. This was a milestone moment for the business and was suddenly the talk of the town.
If you’re looking for the real fish and chip experience I recommend the classic Battered Cod, chips, with a side of mushy peas. The batter is always crispy and incredibly light, courtesy of their secret recipe.
If you’re after something a little ‘lighter’, they also offer a great choice of grilled fish, served with lemon and tarragon and a fresh salad.

Grind
One of the most popular spots in Greenwich for all-day dining, coffee and cocktails – Grind does it all. It also happens to be one of the town’s largest restaurants, with a beautiful bright conservatory which feels like the hub of Greenwich come the weekend. It’s perfect location for brunch with friends, a working afternoon with coffee on repeat, as well as chilled evening suppers with one of their delicious cocktails.
What Grind does best is the brunch-style dishes which are available throughout the day. There’s always something you ‘fancy’ as well as being one of the few restaurants that offer an all-day breakfast throughout the day.
If I’m craving something brunch-y (not a word but it should be) I like to order the Smoked Salmon crumpets, herb cream cheese, rocket, and toasted seeds. Also, avocado-lovers will be pleased to know that the famous Smashed Avocado on toast is available at any time throughout the day.
If you’re more of a sweet tooth, the Buttermilk Pancakes with whipped mascarpone, berry compote and maple syrup is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, and truly insta-worthy.

Pasta Evangelists
Fresh artisan pasta has never been so accessible, whether you are wanting a speedy lunch, a relaxing dinner, or even pasta to take-away. Pasta Evangelists has brought sensational pasta into its most accessible form with this delightful restaurant and take-away experience.
This company first started out as an online only business, delivering perfect portioned pastificio-style pasta and sauces. Such was the success of the business the Pasta Evangelists launched their restaurants, with locations all around London including Farringdon, Chiswick, as well as a prime spot in the heart of Greenwich town.
The restaurant is a warm terracotta ode to Italy, with a fresh pasta station at the front with the chef ready to mix and match your perfect pasta treat. At the front of the restaurant is a touch screen if you’d prefer to take the pasta away – there’s always a spot around the Cutty Sark to take a seat and enjoy your meal alfresco.
With a wealth of pasta options to choose from, you’ll no doubt find your perfect comfort dish. I recommend their signature ‘Carbonara of Dreams’ with crisp pancetta and guanciale – a classic for a reason. Other contenders include Tuscan style beef and Chianti egg lasagne, Black truffle mac and cheese, as well as the fiery Spicy Arrabbiata.
You’ll also find a selection of classic, Italian sides including Aubergine Parmigiana, Mini Calzone, Garlic and Chilli King prawns, and some indulgent charcuterie and burrata sharing boards.

Tai Won Mein
If you’re familiar with the Greenwich food scene or have even lived in the area at some point, you will know about the legendary Tai Won Mein. This is the spot to find your fix of Chinese noodles and rice – with servings of epic proportions. It’s become a regular spot for pre-cinema noodles (for me, any case) and for many locals in the area.
It’s a no-frills restaurant with canteen-style tables, and if you’re in a hurry, you’re guaranteed to be served promptly. The menu is extensive with a selection of Fried Ho Fun, Udon Noodles, Vermicelli soups, as well as starters and sides.
I’ve been coming to Tai Won Mein for years, and it’s one of those places where you eventually land on some favourite dishes. My order generally goes as follow: Chicken Satay, Prawn toast, and a portion of the Mixed meat vermicelli noodles. It’s comforting and familiar and always a great go-to have. Also note that it’s a cash only premises.

Bill’s
The ever-popular Bill’s restaurant has become a staple of the local food landscape. It takes you from breakfast, brunch, all the way through to dinner. In fact, this restaurant ticks most boxes, whether for pancakes at breakfast, afternoon tea with a friend, or big family get-together at lunch.
The menu is a please-all crowd favourite of British and European classics from Fish pie, Buttermilk Chicken Burger, Halloumi Shawarma, and Rump Steak. The all-day menu also has a great selection of fresh salads as well as a variety of plant-based dishes.
You might be interested to know that Bill’s is famous for their fluffy pancakes, which are generous to a fault. They even have a separate menu dedicated menu, so you can be sure that they take their pancakes seriously. I recommend their 3 stack Biscoff Crumb with Maple and Banana. If you’re sharing with a friend, try the 5 stack Berries and Whipped Vanilla Cream. You can also find plenty of vegan options.

Champagne & Fromage
For a truly indulgent treat, there really is no better place to visit in Greenwich than the decadent Champagne & Fromage. Apparently, this pairing works so well as the light, effervescent Champagne never overpowers the richness of the cheese – it’s a culinary match made in heaven, you could say.
This is a restaurant where quality is always at the forefront as their fantastic produce is all sourced from small, independent producers in France.
This is one of my favourites places for a weekend treat and made even better when sat outside, with the gentle bustle of nearby Greenwich Market.
If you’re looking for the full Champagne & Fromage experience I recommend one of the sharing boards which will give you a great selection of French artisan cheeses, as well as bread and condiments. You can choose between 3/5 and even combine with a charcuterie selection.
If you’re a true cheese-lover (like me) then you also can’t miss the Creamy Baked Camembert, with rosemary and honey and served with a fresh, French baguette.
Now, for the Champagne: if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, sample the Tasting Flight which gives you the choice of three different types of Champagne. If you prefer just a single glass, the Moutardier Rose is delightfully soft and mellow.

Franco Manca
Inspired by authentic Neapolitan pizza, Franco Manco is a true slice of Italy on your plate. Born in 2008, Franco Manca were one of the earliest pioneers in the UK ‘sourdough’ movement, and with sourdough it’s all about the taste.
The authentic pizza experience starts with a late-18th century sourdough starter which ferments for at least 24 hours. This process ensures that familiar tangy taste, which is so deeply moreish, as well as that satisfyingly chewy, crisp crust.
For the classic Franco Manca experience try the Franco’s OG Margherita, made with juicy red tomatoes from Vesuvio, buffalo mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil and basil. I also recommend the cured Iberico Chorizo, which has a delicious spicy kick.
In addition, you can mix it up with a hearty salad such as the Caprese with burrata, and the veggie-packed Artichoke and Butternut squash.
And if you have any room left, an order of the homemade Tiramisu is a must.

Trafalgar Tavern
The majestic Trafalgar Tavern is one of London’s true landmark Victorian pubs, dating all the way back to 1837. This nineteenth-century historical gem has a legendary spot overlooking the River Thames, right in the heart of maritime Greenwich.
You’ll spot the pub straight away with the decorative flag bunting which covers the stretch of the pub, all the way through to Crane Street.
This is one best pubs for alfresco dining with a plethora of tables and benches, offering one of the best drinking spots in London.
This pub has also become known for its fantastic food menu, with a special nod to Whitebait which has been on the menu since the 19th century. The menu is seasonal British cuisine, with one of the best Sunday Roasts in the area.
If you’re ordering off the classic ‘Pub’ menu there’s no better way to start your meal than the Greenwich Whitebait with caper mayonnaise and lemon. The mains are hearty fare, especially the Venison and Guiness Pie or the classic Beer battered haddock with minted mushy peas.
There’s no better way to end the meal than with a rich Sticky Toffee Pudding with butterscotch sauce, or the divine Treacle Tart and custard.

Japes
You don’t have to go all the way to the US for authentic Chicago-style pizza – in fact, Greenwich will do just fine. The fun-filled, deep-dish delight that is Japes started out in 2018, bringing London customers a taste of Chicago with unapologetically indulgent fillings.
It’s a far cry from the thin-crust Neapolitan style pizza that has taken over the London restaurant scene, but the unabashed fun of these golden crusted pizzas is one of the tastiest (and filling!) ways to enjoy a slice of the US.
What I love about the menu is the variety: you can choose from the classic Chicago style crust, as well as the ‘London’ and ‘New York’ style. If deep-dish isn’t to your preference, the London pizza with its signature fermented dough on a thinner base might be more to your taste, or indeed the New York which is full or chew and crunch and can even be folded to enjoy like a sandwich.
Of course, if you’re a Japes ‘purist’ there’s nothing better than the Pepperoni which is loaded with mozzarella and parmesan – even more indulgent when you upgrade to the Parmesan crust. You can also custom your pizza with any number of extra ingredients, to ensure the perfect slice.

Greenwich Market
The undeniable focal point of the town is the historic and world-renowned Greenwich Market. The market has been trading and selling for over a century, first opening its doors in 1737. The market began with 60 stallholders, selling a variety of meat, vegetables and fruit.
Today, the market welcomes visitors from all over the globe, who peruse the many stalls of arts, crafts, books, clothing, as well as food and drink. The market is also flanked by several shops and boutiques, which only adds to the incredible buzz of the area.
For foodies, there’s no better market to explore, and with a newly expanded area dedicated entirely to food, you’ll be spoilt for choice – from Thai noodles, Korean style baos, loaded fries, pizza, tacos, and that’s just for starters. If you’re going as a group, try a few different items and sit at one of the nearby tables – they’re tricky to get but not impossible!
In addition, if you’re after some excellent French wines, cheeses and nibbles, L’Hexagone is a must.
Cutty Sark
This historic Cutty Sark is one of south-east London’s most sought-after riverside pubs. This Grade-II listed venue dates back to 1800 and is quietly nestled in the peaceful location at Ballast Quay – only a short walk from the nearby Trafalgar Tavern.
The pub is well regarded for their seasonal menu, cooking up some of the best fish dishes in Greenwich, too. In addition, their Sunday Roast is one of the finest in the area and well-worth booking in advance.
Once ensconced at one of their cosy tables, the menu is a beautifully thought-through ode to the classic pub menu: Honey-mustard Cumberland sausage and mash, Chicken, ham hock and tarragon pie, and the must-try Aspall Cyder battered haddock, chips, tartar sauce, curry sauce and mushy peas.
If the weather is looking fair – and that’s all you can often hope for in London – then definitely take advantage of the outside tables overlooking the River Thames.

Midpoint
For a taste of the Mediterranean on the Thames, I’d love to introduce you to Midpoint. If you haven’t yet visited, you’ll discover some of the best Turkish cuisine in London. The food is prepped with love and care, and the portions makes a humble lunch feel like a feast.
For starters, their cold and hot meze dishes are designed to share and highlights include the Humus, Bulgar salad with onion mint, and parsley, Aubergine with peppers and yoghurt, as well as the ‘hot’ items of Grilled Halloumi, Fried Calamari with garlic sauce, and the Turkish filo pastry with feta cheese.
The grilled meat and fish are another highlight, and may I suggest the Chicken Shish and Lamb Chops, as well as the Sea Bass and King Prawn Casserole. I just hope you arrive hungry.
You’ll also find the fresh pita utterly addictive.

Sticks N Sushi
The delightful fusion between Japanese and Danish cuisine is the philosophy behind Sticks and Sushi. Founded in 1994 by brothers Kim Rahbek and Thor Andersen, taking inspiration from their half-Japanese, half-Danish background, to create a menu that both delights and surprises.
You could say this restaurant provides ‘something’ for every palette whether you are looking for the freshest, high-quality Sushi, or the richly marinated chicken and beef skewers straight from the grill – you can mix and match according to each diner, with an assortment of dishes.
For a true taste of Sticks N Sushi start with an order of the Nigiri, with particular attention towards the sublime Seared yellowtail kingfish, Yellowfin tuna, and the Salmon and garlic.
Of course, the ‘sticks’ element of the meal is a must, and certainly one of the tastiest. My forever favourites include the Fried chicken thigh with sweet and sour dashi, Sweet potato with Teriyaki and coriander cress, and the Shrimp with spicy gochujang and the garlic butter.
