Best Fish & Chip Restaurants In London

Best Fish & Chip Restaurants In London

Fish-lovers and pescatarians alike have an abundance of dining choices throughout the capital with some of the finest fish and chip restaurants on the map. If you’re looking for the perfect fried, crispy cod and chips, with a side of mushy peas (a must in our opinion!) we promise you’re in for a treat.

Fish and Chips has a long-standing history in British food culture, gaining prominence around the 19th century. The very first fish and chip shop as we know it, was opened in Bow, East London, in 1860 by Jewish immigrant, Joseph Malin. He was a true pioneer of his time. The humble fish and chips quickly became one of the most popular meals of the working classes, and its popularity skyrocketed the dish to national status.

In the spirit of honouring all fish and chips restaurants, we have included a variety of places throughout the city, whether you’re looking for a no-frills classic, or, if you fancy your chips with a side of Champagne – we have something for every possible whim and occasion.

The Mayfair Chippy

The Mayfair Chippy

The luxe surrounds of Mayfair makes this ‘chippy’ a true cut above. This welcoming restaurant has fast become a staple of Mayfair’s dining scene since opening in 2015.

What we really like is the attention to detail: when you order a classic fish and chips, whether it be cod or haddock, it will come with three little pots of sauces, including curry sauce, tartar sauce, and some good ol’ mushy peas. The batter is beautifully crisp, with a milky-soft fish that just falls apart.

This restaurant also boasts a spectacular seafood menu, so you may find yourself drawn to other specialties on the menu. And, if you fancy something other than fish and chips, you could choose from the Lobster Macaroni Cheese with tarragon relish, Cornish Crab Salad with avocado and fennel, or, a beautiful platter Maldon Rock Oysters with shallot vinegar. We love the fact it’s a restaurant that pleases both the fish and chip purists and seafood-lovers alike.

Such is the popularity of this restaurant, it’s now open 7 days a week – plenty of opportunities to enjoy one of the best ‘chippies’ in town.

They have a divine selection of British desserts, including Bread and Butter Pudding with apricot glaze, or our very favourite Sherry Trifle with black cherry and vanilla cream which is perfect for two to share.

Sutton & Sons

Sutton & Sons

This delightful family-run business has been sourcing the finest fish for over 20 years, and have become legendary around London for their classic dishes, and warm-hearted welcome.

What we love about Sutton & Sons, apart from their incredible battered fish, is that they have never shied away from diversifying their menu. They were one of the very first fish and chip establishments to introduce a full vegan menu, and not just a couple of dishes, but a menu to rival the mainstream offerings. If you follow a vegan diet there is a plethora of options on the menu, including plant-based fried fish and chips, pie and mash with onion gravy, and even some brilliant takes on ‘prawn’ cocktail and ‘calamari’ strips.

If you’re looking to order from the classic menu, you must try the breaded whitebait to start, and then a portion of haddock and chips (with a side of mushy peas, of course).

Save a little room for dessert and order the Battered Mars Bar with vanilla ice-cream – utterly decadent!

Kerridge’s Fish & Chips at Harrods

Kerridge’s Fish & Chips at Harrods

One of the UK’s most beloved chefs has taken the humble fish and chips to new luxury heights. Tom Kerridge is a legendary name in London’s restaurant scene, and throughout the UK, for his superlative cooking and commitment to the finest sustainable produce. Enter Kerridge’s Fish and Chips at Harrods – two iconic names in one incredible venue.

The classic fried fish and triple cooked chips is as good as you would expect with Tom’s impeccable pedigree. Think crisp, air-light batter encasing the flakiest, fresh fish. Also, his triple-cooked chips are practically mythical – you may need to order more. You also have pots Matson curry sauce, tartare sauce and pease pudding for the dipping. It’s an altogether fancy affair, and, if something more extravagant takes your fancy, you also have a choice of Whole Lobster with herb butter, hand-dived scallops, as well as Caviar served with chips and crème fraiche.

The Rose Pub & Kitchen

The Rose Pub & Kitchen

One of south-east London’s loveliest pubs, The Rose, is a reliable, local favourite. It has a stellar menu of pub classics which their loyal clientele have all come to know and love.

The most popular of all – no surprises here – is the Beer Battered Line-caught Haddock, triple cooked chips and mushy peas. The portions are always super generous, and the quality is second to none. Expect a large fish which overflows from the plate – always a good sign.

Each time we visit we see the staff serving this beloved dish, often running back to the kitchen to bring all manner of sauces and vinegar. It’s what this pub does best, and it’s served 7 days a week.

Pair your fish and chips with one of their splendid cocktails. It may not be a typical pairing but they do a fabulous Margarita.

Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill

Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill

Bentley’s is a true London institution and have been serving their exquisite Oysters and Champagne for over 100 years. Since 2005, it has been steered by the watchful and masterful eye of Chef Richard Corrigan. He has cemented his reputation over the years as one of the finest chefs of his generation, with a deep love of fresh, seasonal produce.

And while Bentley’s is known for its oysters, it’s equally beloved for their traditional fish and chips. They haven’t messed about with this dish in any way, keeping it beautifully simple: the freshest fish, crunchiest batter and fluffy chips with some homemade mushy peas. We suggest pairing this dish with a crisp glass of Chablis.

If you’re also in the market for trying further dishes, you can’t go wrong with the Cornish Fish Stew and the Classic Seafood Platter. You simply won’t want to leave!

Leave a little room for Sticky Toffee Pudding to finish. It comes with oodles of toffee sauce – just the way we like it.

Fish! Restaurant

Fish! Restaurant

A stalwart of Borough Market since 1992, Fish! is one of the most popular and reliable seafood restaurants in the city. In fact, it really was the first seafood restaurant of its kind at the time. Restauranteur, Tony Allen, focused on fresh, seasonal produce, with a delightful no-nonsense approach, which still applies to this day.

They are rightly known for their excellent battered fish and chips, with an enviable selection which includes Wild Halibut. While this particular fish is on the pricier side, it really is something special.

In addition, they have a fish-based main menu of inventive entrees, including Soft Shell Crab Burger with Asian slaw and Chargrilled Squid and chorizo.

If you fancy a more chilled fish and chips lunch/supper their next door takeaway shop is always a popular fixture, and, if you’re lucky, you can nab one of the few seats going.

Poppie’s

This is a true London institution and one of our personal favourites on the list. Poppie’s is named after ‘Pop’ Newland, an East Londoner born and bred, who first began life in the fish and chip business at the tender age of 11. You could say, fish and chips is in his blood, as over half a century later, Pop’s delightful fish and chips continues to delight locals and tourist alike.

Our favourite restaurant location is in Spitalfields, and you will instantly feel like you have stepped back in time as the decor is all inspired by Pop’s childhood. You may have to queue for a table, but we promise it’s worth it. They have their very own in-house fishmonger so you know every piece of fish has gone through quality inspection.

For us, it’s always going to be an order of their milky-soft cod, with crispy chips and a pot of curry sauce. Also, their starter of Whitebait is a must, too.

Our suggestion

If you’re feeling adventurous, order the Jellied Eels – it’s a proper East End London delicacy. Not for everyone but definitely worth a try.

Golden Chippy

At the heart of the Greenwich community is a beloved fish and chip shop that has been providing locals, as well as anyone in the know, with the very finest fish and chips in south east London.

When you visit, you may hear the stories of how the Golden Chippy came to be, with the doors first opening back in 2005. Owner, Chris Kanizi, is full of passion for the art of great fish and chips, and proudly held the title of London’s Number One Restaurant on Trip Advisor in 2016.

The quality remains to this day, with the freshest, moreish fish, and generous portions of chips. If you’re feeling especially hungry, you can’t beat a saveloy on the side!

Where to find the Golden Chippy

Our suggestion

The outside terrace is great to sit and enjoy your fish and chips at any time of the year. If it’s busy, it’s always worth waiting for a table.

Toff’s

North London’s Muswell Hill is known for being one of the loveliest areas in the city, and luckily for them, they have one of the finest fish and chip restaurants right on the high street. Toff’s has occupied 38 Muswell Hill Broadway since back in 1968.

They take enormous pride in sourcing their produce directly from the UK’s fish docks. The current owners, George and Costas Georgiou, still make the batter according to the original owners recipe, so careful attention to detail at step. Not surprisingly, numerous awards followed including Best Fish and Chip Shop in the UK as voted by The Seafood Industry in 1989.

With a wide selection of perfectly battered fish, you could choose from Plaice, Skate and Lemon Sole. Of course, it’s always going to be the classic cod and chips for us.

Our suggestion

The Spotted Dick pudding served with custard is a real classic, and one of our favourites.

The Golden Hind

This historic restaurant, right in the heart of picture-perfect Marylebone, has been serving classic fish and chips since 1914. Although the interiors have been modernised over time, it’s still a huge part of London’s culinary history.

Luckily, the recipes haven’t aged and only improved with time, and fish and chips is truly their bread and butter. The fish is always caught on the day and fried in their famous homemade batter. Of all the batters we have tried (and there’s been many!) The Golden Hind has mastered that perfect airy, light batter. This historic venue has never lost its charm and is a must for the true fish and chip lover.

Where to find The Golden Hind

71a – 73 Marylebone Lane, London, W1U 2PN

Our suggestion

If you’re feeling particularly peckish, we recommend a side of the Feta fritters and fresh calamari strips.
