Describe your perfect day in London?
My perfect day in London would start early with a brisk walk around Hyde Park, taking in the fresh morning air, followed by brunch at one of my favourite spots in Marylebone. After that, a bit of culture with a visit to one of the great galleries, perhaps the National Portrait Gallery, before winding down with dinner at a classic London restaurant. Of course, ending the day with a glass of White Burgundy at a cosy bar makes it truly perfect!
Favourite restaurant?
I absolutely adore Rules in Covent Garden, which is the oldest restaurant in London. It has an incredible history dating back to 1798, and I love the traditional British fare they serve. The ambience is incredible, and it’s just like stepping back in time. It’s a true London institution that has been frequented by everyone from Charles Dickens to modern-day celebrities. The classic game dishes and rich decor make it feel like a celebration of London’s culinary history.
If I fancy fish or seafood, I head straight to La Petite Poissonnerie Seafood Bar, a fabulous, intimate seafood haven located in Marylebone. Known for its fresh, sustainably sourced seafood, serving only the finest oysters, prawns, lobster, and other delicacies from the sea, paired with an impressive range of Champagnes.
The ambience of the bar is cosy yet refined, with minimalist décor that adds a touch of modernity to its classic concept. It’s a perfect spot for an upscale lunch, a romantic evening, or simply to enjoy a glass of Champagne with expertly prepared seafood.
Beast Restaurant in Marylebone is another favourite, known for its opulent surf-and-turf offerings, using high-quality ingredients, including Norwegian king crab, wild-caught lobster, and USDA prime steak.
Their signature dishes include succulent, dry-aged beef cuts cooked to perfection, and fresh, buttery crab served in a way that highlights its natural flavours. The extensive wine list is carefully curated to complement the rich, robust flavours of the food. The concept revolves around bold, simple dishes presented in a luxurious yet inviting setting. Located in the heart of Marylebone, it’s a must-visit for those seeking a feast in style.
Best place for brunch?
Brunch for me is always a treat, and I love a spot like The Wolseley. The timeless elegance of this grand café never fails to impress, and the Eggs Benedict is divine. The Wolseley’s art deco interior and the way they bring a touch of European café culture to London is unmatched. Plus, it’s just a stone’s throw away from all the galleries and shops in Mayfair.
What was the last museum or gallery you visited?
I took my granddaughters to the Natural History Museum, and they were in awe of the dinosaur exhibits! It’s a place that never fails to capture the imagination of both children and adults. I still remember going there as a child myself, and now it’s even more magical seeing it through the eyes of the younger generation. The architecture alone is breathtaking, and it’s always a great day out.
Where are the best places to shop?
Well, I have a confession – I’m not a big shopper. I tend to shop when I need something specific, go out, find it, and then head straight home. However, when I do browse, it’s usually at John Lewis – I like to say it’s my corner shop! It has everything you need in one place, and the customer service is impeccable, which makes shopping there a breeze.
Preferred bar or pub for a great night out?
If I’m going out for a great night with friends, I love Le Magritte Bar & Terrace at The Beaumont Hotel. It has such an intimate and luxurious vibe, perfect for sipping cocktails, or in my case, a glass of White Burgundy. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day, or to celebrate something special in style.
Tipple of choice?
Ah, I’m quite partial to a crisp White Burgundy. I like a Chablis when it comes to celebrations. I also love a glass of Blanc de Blancs Champagne from Fortnum & Mason. They have a fabulous selection that isn’t too pricey but feels incredibly indulgent.
Most relaxing place to unwind?
For me, nothing beats the serene atmosphere of The Langham Hotel. Whether it’s afternoon tea or a spa visit, the Langham just oozes relaxation and class. I’ve had some of the most wonderfully relaxing afternoons there, and it’s just a chance to unwind in beautiful surroundings.
If you had only one day in London, where would you visit?
If I only had one day, it would have to include a visit to the Royal Opera House. I adore ballet, and there’s nothing quite like watching a performance in such an iconic venue. It’s a little piece of magic right in the heart of Covent Garden. Whether it’s a classic like ‘Swan Lake’ or something more contemporary, it’s always a breathtaking experience.
What is your top London tip?
Keep away from the crowds! I love exploring the quieter, historic areas like Liberty or indulging in a little shopping at Fortnum & Mason. And of course, Burlington Arcade is a must if you want to experience a bit of old-world charm without the hustle and bustle. London has so many hidden gems if you know where to look.
